Painting on Pastelmat

This is my first attempt painting on a new paper called Pastelmat.  Since I often paint animals, I thought I’d first test how suitable the paper is for fur.  I used my dog as the subject.  My usual method of painting fur didn’t work on this paper, so unless I figure out a way to get the results I want, I won’t be using this paper for animals in the future.  I can see great possibilities with other subjects, though.

Soft Pastel on Pastelmat
Pastelmat is an amazing surface.  It is so smooth, you wouldn’t expect it to grab onto the pastel, but that’s exactly what it does.  I’m looking forward to experimenting with different subjects and discovering what I can do with it.

Your skill still pulled off an excellent piece; I never would have guessed any problem :) Thanks for review, I love it when artists do this.

Beautiful painting Kari. Your dog looks plenty furry to me. I think the results have more to do with the artist than the paper...in my humble opinion.

Thank you Erika and Dominique! I'm glad you like it. :)

Gracias, Isabel! Me alegro de que te gusta la pintura, y realmente aprecio tu comentario!

Thanks, Vern! When you work in soft pastel, the results you get vary by the type of support you use. Of course, it isn't going to be a huge difference, but I definitely have to think about the results I want before choosing my support. Check out my cupcakes post and you'll see what I mean.

This looks amazing! If there was a problem, it is definitely not evident!

Fantastic work! Wonderful soft effect. The light in this is so beautiful and I love all the different shades of cream and white.

Thank you Kari for sharing your experience with the Pastelmat as I was wanting to use it. Very lovely piece and there's nothing wrong with the the fur but I know what you mean when it comes to painting fur with pastels. You need the perfect support otherwise, it's hard to get the results you expect.

Thanks Regina and Gwen! I appreciate the nice comments. :)

Thank you, Colette! The results with the Pastelmat seem similar to a sanded paper (without the sore fingertips!) to me. Not my first choice for animals, for sure. But it just might be my first choice for other things from now on. I'm liking it much more with the painting I'm working on now. Will have more to show and say about it soon.

My goodness, You may not like the results, but it sure is a wonderful painting!!! I love the details you were able to capture too! I think you did a marvelous job on this support and maybe should try again. :D

Thank you, Nancy! I may try again when I get used to the paper. Right now it's just trial and error. ;)

A great piece, Kari.I know what you mean by sore fingertips! Here in the UK I use Fisher 400 paper that's like fine sandpaper - one's digits do throb after a hard day's blending. I tried velour paper once and liked the softness of it but did struggle to get fine detail.

Thanks, MS! This paper is better at detail than velour, IMO. You might like it.
